Hunting Rabbit

Find out how to hunt for delicious rabbit

Hunting Rabbit

hunting | foraging | general

Rabbit is a delicious animal which is one of the best value meats available at the butchers where it is sold either as local wild rabbit, or as farmed rabbit.

Hunting rabbits by shooting with a high powered air rifle

With over 40 million wild rabbits in the UK, there are no shortage of farmers and land owners who would be delighted to have their local population controlled to reduce the damage done to crops. Every year over £100 million of crop damage is done by rabbits in the UK, with farmers spending a total of over £5 million trying to manage the rabbit population.

Shooting Rabbit

High powered air rifle

The most humane way of hunting for rabbit is with a high powered air rifle. A shotgun should ideally not be used as the shot pellets can ruin the meat, and the noise of the first shot will scare the rest of the rabbit population back into their burrows. With an air rifle, a rabbit can be despatched almost silently with an accurate shot between the eye and the ear bringing instant death. The hunter can then continue to pick off more rabbits from his or her downwind hiding place.

Autumn is the best season to hunt rabbit. The rabbits will be fit and strong from their summer of healthy eating and exercise, and they will have recovered from the breeding season. The best time to hunt is at dawn or dusk when the rabbits are out of their burrows feeding.
